PTA to Crack Down on Unregistered Mobile Devices in GB and AJK September 1st, 2023

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority PTA has announced that it will begin blocking unregistered mobile devices in Gilgit Baltistan (GB) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on September 1st, 2023. The move is aimed at curbing the rampant use of smuggled and counterfeit mobile phones in the two regions.

Under the PTA’s Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS), all mobile devices must undergo registration with the authority before they can be used. Consequently, unregistered devices will be deactivated, rendering them unable to make or receive calls, send or receive text messages, or access the internet.

The PTA has emphasized that the DIRBS system is indispensable for ensuring the security and safety of mobile communications in GB and AJK. Specifically, the system will aid in preventing the exploitation of mobile phones for illegal activities, including terrorism, smuggling, and fraud.

The PTA has also said that the DIRBS system will help to protect consumers from counterfeit and smuggled mobile phones. These phones often do not meet the same safety and quality standards as genuine phones, and they can pose a safety hazard to users.

The PTA has urged all mobile phone users in GB and AJK to register their devices with the authority before September 1st. The registration process is simple and can be done online or at any PTA office.

Conclusion:

The PTA’s move to block unregistered mobile devices in GB and AJK is a positive step towards ensuring the security and safety of mobile communications in the two regions. Furthermore, the DIRBS system will help to prevent the use of mobile phones for illegal activities and protect consumers from counterfeit and smuggled phones.
